Sports Betting Guide - Bet Canadian Sportsbook
Bet Canadian offers a large variety of wagers on all major sports and horse racing. This guide is to help you understand the different wagers available and how to place wagers on all your favorite sporting events.
Example:
| Jets |
39 |
+140 |
| Steelers |
-3 |
-160 |
Point-spread
Football is most commonly wagered on using a point-spread. In our example the Steelers are a 3 point favorite over the Jets. If you wagered on the Steelers, you are laying or giving up 3 points. The Steelers must win by more than 3 points to win the wager. If the Steelers win by exactly 3 points, the game is a push or tie and wagers on either side are refunded. A wager on the Jets would payoff if they won the game or lost by less than 3 points.
Totals
The total in our example is 39. You may wager on the combined score for both teams is over or under 39 points. Again, it doesn't matter who wins the game when wagering on a total. In point-spread and totals wagering, both payoff at 10/11, unless otherwise stated. On winning wagers the bettor wins $10 for every $11 wagered. If you wager $220 on the Jets and you win, you would collect $420, the $220 you wagered and the $200 in winnings.
Money-lines
Money-lines are available on most NFL games. Just as in baseball, a money-line is simply picking the winner of the game. In our example, $160 wagered on the Steelers would return $260 if they win. The $160 that was wagered and the $100 in winnings. A $100 wager on the Jets would return $240 if they won. The $100 that was wagered and the $140 in winnings.
Parlays
You may select from 2-10 teams in a parlay. All selections must be winning wagers to collect on a parlay. If one or more selections are ties, the parlay would be reduced down by the number of ties. For example, a 2-team parlay with the Steelers -3 and the over 39 for $100 and the Steelers win 23-16. The Steelers -3 would be a winner and the over 39 would be a push or tie. If one team in a two team parlay ties, then it will reduce to a straight wager paying 10/11. Also see our Limits and Payoffs for all Parlay and Teaser payoff tables.
Teasers
You may select from 2-6 teams in a teaser. Bet Canadian offers 6, 6 ½ and 7 point teasers. A teaser allows you to add 6, 6 ½ or 7 points to an underdog or subtract 6, 6 ½ or 7 points from the favorite. We also offer a special 3-team 10 point teaser. If a point spread has money line of -120 or greater, all teasers revert to the next half point higher. Ex: -7 -120 would be teased from -7½.
Buying Points
The bettor may adjust a point-spread wager in their favor by ½ point or a full point by laying an additional 10 cents per half point. To move "on" or "off" a 3 in the Pros costs an additional 25 cents and in College an additional 20 cents. To move "on" or "off" 7 costs 15 cents in both Pro and College.
Halftimes
New point-spreads are established at halftime for wagering on the second half of all NFL and nationally televised NCAA games. Halftime wagering includes overtime.
BASKETBALL

Example:
Point-spread
Basketball, like football, is most commonly wagered on using a point-spread. In the example, the Knicks are a 6 point favorite over the underdog Celtics. The Knicks would have to win by more than 6 points to cover the spread and win the wager. The Celtics could lose by less than 6 points and still win the wager. Basketball wagers win $100 for every $110 wagered for a return of $210.
Totals
Basketball totals require the bettor to select whether the combined score of both teams will be over or under the point-spread, in this case 181 points. The payoff for totals is 10/11 unless otherwise stated.
Teasers
Bet Canadian offers 4, 4 ½ and 5 point basketball teasers. See Limits and Payoffs for complete payoff tables. We also offer selected Money-lines, Halftimes, Parlays, Futures and Season wins. Refer to the football section for a more detailed explanation of these wagers.
BASEBALL

Example:
| Yankees |

-105 |
+1 ½ |
-105 |
| Red Sox |
C. Shilling |
-155 |
7 ½ |

-1 ½ |
+135 |
Money-Line
The most common wager in baseball is the money-line. The money-line is simply selecting the winner of the contest. In the example listed above, the Red Sox are the favorite and are playing against the underdog Yankees. If you wager on the Red Sox, you would have to risk $155 to win $100. If the Red Sox win, a $155 wager on them would win $100, for a return of $255. If the Yankees should win, a $100 wager on them would win $145 for a return of $245. The amounts in the example are to illustrate the rate of return, you determine how much you want to wager. Money-lines can be used in any sport, but are most popular in baseball.
Totals
Another popular baseball wager is the total. The bettor may wager on whether the final score will be over or under a specific number. In totals wagering, it doesn't matter who wins the game. But instead, the total combined runs scored by both teams. In our example, the total is 7½. If you wager on the over, you would win $100 for every $105 wagered. If the teams score more than 7½ runs combined, your return would be $205. If you wager on the under and the two teams combine for less than 7½ runs, you would win $100 for every $125 wagered, for a return of $225. In the case of a tie, all wagers would be refunded.
Run-line
In addition to the money-line, clients may also wager on the run-line. The run-line uses plus or minus 1½ runs to handicap the favorite and underdog. In our example, the Red Sox would be -1½ runs, meaning they would have to win the game by more than 1½ to collect the wager. By giving up 1½ runs, the bettor is rewarded with a greater payoff, in this case +135. The Yankees receive 1½ runs and would lay -105 to win $100. Since the Yankees are receiving 1½ runs, they could lose the game by one run and still win the wager.
Baseball Proposition
Run, Hits, Errors
Total hits runs and errors in the game Both starting pitchers must go for action. Game must go 8 1/2 innings if home team is winning or 9 innings if road team is winning for action. Extra innings counts. If a game goes past 9 innings and is not completed no action.
Other Baseball Options
The pitcher is the most important player on the field in baseball. Many wagers are based on the pitcher. You may specify one of the following conditions when wagering on baseball.
- Action: Team vs. Team regardless of the listed pitchers. If one or both of the listed pitchers do not start then the price will be adjusted by Bet Canadian to reflect the "off" pitcher.
- Listed: Both listed pitchers must start or "no action".
- List One Pitcher: You may specify a pitcher from either team. That pitcher must start, if not, the wager is refunded. The odds will be adjusted if the unspecified listed pitcher is changed. If your listed pitcher goes, you always have action
Baseball Parlays
A baseball parlay is a single wager on two or more outcomes. The wager amount and the profits from one winning wager is rolled over and parlayed to the second wager.
Parlays seem to have become more popular. In this wager, the bettor is picking more than one outcome to wager on, but only making one wager. An example of this would be, Mets +140, Oakland +180 in a 2-team $100 parlay. Both teams must win for the bettor to win. This works as follows: $100 wagered on the Mets, they win so now the bettor would have his $100 plus his winning (+140) = $240. The second part of the parlay was wagered on Oakland.
They also win, so he would receive 240 x 2.80 = $672.00.
Parlays are just a way of saying put all my winnings from result #1 onto my next choice. Here at Bet Canadian, a bettor may play as many teams in a parlay as he chooses (up to 10 teams). The more teams he chooses, the more he can win, but the harder it is to win. No wager shall pay more than $20,000 per wager on Parlays.
Now the math behind baseball parlays. Whenever you take the underdog, plus odds (ex. +140) in a parlay, you add 100 to it, for figuring out the parlay payoff. In the above example, the bettor was taking +140 and +180 to make a 2-team parlay. $100 wagered (1.40 + 1.00) = 2.40 x (1.80 + 1.00) = 2.80, which is (2.40 x 2.80) = $672.00.
Whenever you take the favorite minus odds (ex. -150) in a parlay. The minus number needs to be converted to a decimal. In order to do this, divide 100 by the minus number and then add 1, ex. 100/150 = .666, add 1 to that and you get 1.666. Now lets figure a $100 parlay with a -150 favorite and a +180 underdog. $100 wagered (.666 + 1) = 1.666 plus the $100 wagered = 166.60 x (1.80 + 1.00) = 2.80 which is (166.60 x 2.80) = $466.48.
The formula for figuring out baseball is as follows:
Amount of wager x (Factor + 1) x (Factor +1) = Payoff
The factor is worked out in the following manner. Underdog or (+) money, Favorite or (-) money, price divided into 100. Below is an equivalent odds chart for favorites with the + 1 already added in.

You can parlay from 2-10 teams. Parlay as many underdogs or favorites as you like. Just for fun, lets do a 6-Team Parlay to see the potential payoff. Our teams are +150, +140, +120, +100, -130, and -160. Using the conversion chart we get the following. $100 wager x 2.5 x 2.4 x 2.2 x 2 x 1.769 x 1.625 = 7589.01 or 7589. Not bad for just risking $100. But remember all six games must win. If one of the games was postponed or cancelled, your 6-team parlay would become a 5-team parlay and so on.
Note:
Baseball can be confusing. If you have any questions about wagering rules or methods, please do not hesitate to ask a Bet Canadian staff member.
HOCKEY

Hockey is wagered on using a split line, which is a combination of a point-spread and a money-line.
Example:
| Red Wings |
+ ½ |
+105 |
6 ½ |
+110 |
| Avalanche |
- ½ |
-125 |
6 ½ |
-130 |
The point-spread +/- ½ would determine the winner, if in the case of a tie, the Red Wings would win because they are + ½. The payoffs are the same as all standard money-lines. Refer to the baseball section for a detailed explanation of money-lines and totals. We offer split-lines, totals, parlays, futures and season wins on hockey.
In the event of a shootout, the winner of the shootout will be awarded one goal that will count towards the side and total of any wager.
GOLF

With the growth in golf participation, golf wagering has likewise blossomed. Wagers are available in a variety of match-ups, unique propositions and odds to win a tournament. Golf is generally wagered using a money-line.
AUTO RACING

Auto Racing, specifically NASCAR, is a big focus for us at Bet Canadian. We offer odds on head-to-head match-ups, Props and 2001 Winston Cup futures. Look for new innovative ideas in the months ahead.
SOCCER

There are various different ways one may wager on soccer. Bet Canadian offers the most common ways to wager on this sport, which include Sides, Totals, Draw and Parlays.
Example:
| Manchester United |
+150 |
| Liverpool |
+160 |
| Draw |
+210 |
| Total |
2 ½o |
MONEY-LINE (SINGLES BETS):
Involves betting on the outcome of a match in 90 minutes (i.e. 1st half and 2nd half), choosing whether the game will end in a home win, an away win or the draw. Extra time does not count in this case - as in many Cup matches, when goals scored in extra-time do not count for wagering purposes. However, separate odds are often quoted for a team to go through to the next round (either through winning in Extra-Time, by Penalties or by the Golden Goal) - these wagers are usually termed "Outright Winner" wagers, as opposed to "Within 90 Minutes Winner" wagers.
PARLAYS (MULTIPLE BETS):
Soccer parlays are a single wager on two or more outcomes. The wager amount and the profits from one winning wager is rolled over and parlayed to the second wager. Also see our Parlay Conversion Chart on how to figure soccer parlay payoffs. These "multiple bets" simply are a string of single bets, with more than one outcome. Just as with the single wager you must determine whether your selected matches will end in respective home win, away win or draw.
BOXING

Bet Canadian accepts boxing wagers on all Major Championship Fights and many Minor Bouts. Boxing is wagered on using a money-line. Major Championship Fights typically have a total on the number of rounds and any number of propositions.
TENNIS

Odds to win a tournament, along with quarterfinals, semis and finals match-ups for men's and women's majors. Tennis is also wagered on using a money-line. A tennis match must be completed for all bets to stand. In the event that a player retires during a match then all bets are void and stakes are refunded.
HORSE RACING

Bet Canadian accepts wagers on all Major Race Tracks in the U.S. All wagers are accepted by horse name. You may wager on:
